‘Taxi’ star: Americans ‘a bunch of racists’

Hollywood’s Danny DeVito, weighing in on the Oscar flap that’s resulted from the all-white nominations, said in an interview from the Sundance Film Festival in Utah that he’s not surprised because the entire country is racist, and so are all Americans.

People reported DeVito also called Americans “a bunch of racists.”

He then went on, speaking to the Associated Press from Utah: “It’s unfortunate that the entire country is a racist country,” he said.

DeVito referred to the fiasco over the Oscar nominees, and the backlash from director Spike Lee and actor-actress husband-wife team, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, who’ve vowed to boycott the award ceremony, and said this is just what’s to be expected.

“So this is one example of the fact that even though people were giving great performances in movies, they weren’t even thought about,” he said, the Daily Mail reported. “We are living in a country that discriminates and has certain racist tendencies. So sometimes it manifests itself in something like this and it’s illuminated. But just generally speaking, we’re a bunch of racists.”

Fellow actor Don Cheadle said similarly, calling the situation over the Oscar’s a “symptom,” the Daily Mail reported.

“This is dealing with the symptom, not starting at the root cause,” Cheadle said, the AP reported.
