North Korea’s H-bomb test sets globe on alert

North Korea has set the world on edge with its claimed successful hydrogen bomb test.

North Korea has set the world on edge with its claimed successful hydrogen bomb test.

The United States and Japan have called on the U.N. Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to discuss North Korea’s claim of a successful hydrogen bomb test, an act that violates several international resolutions.

“The DPRK’s nuclear test, if confirmed, is in clear violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and is deeply regrettable,” the International Atomic Energy Agency said, the Guardian reported. “I strongly urge the DPRK to implement fully all relevant resolutions of the U.N. Security Council and the IAEA.”

U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said the test could not be independently confirmed. But North Korea has called its detonation “a perfect success” and the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a sizable earthquake near the site of supposed testing.

Still, the Associated Press found the level of explosion measured near the site was much smaller than what would have been recorded for an actual bomb.

And so did Bruce Bennett, an analyst with the Rand Corporation, in the Guardian: ” The bang they should have gotten would have been ten times greater than what they’re claiming. So Kim Jong-un is either lying, saying they did a hydrogen test when they didn’t, they just used a little bit more efficient fission weapon, or the hydrogen part of the test really didn’t work very well.”

The United States issued a somewhat tame statement.

“While we cannot confirm these claims at this time, we condemn any violation of U.S. Security Council resolutions and again call on North Korea to abide by its international obligations and commitments,” Kirby said, in his statement.

Japan, however, deployed three T4 training planes to collect any radioactive materials in the air above the test site.

“To understand the impact of possible radioactive materials released by the test, Air Self-Defense Force planes have collected dust in the air,” said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suge, the nation’s top spokesman, during a press conference. “It is currently being sent to the Japan Chemical Analysis Center.”

Other Seoul government officials called the reported test a “grave threat to Japan.”

Russia’s weighed in, as well, saying through its foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova: “Such actions are fraught with further aggravation of the situation on the Korean peninsula, which is anyway marked by very high potential of military and political confrontation.”

Meanwhile, other media outlets like the Financial Times cautioned North Korea’s claims of becoming a nuclear power has “become a major domestic propaganda trope in recent years,” suggesting this latest test, the fourth in recent years, is little more than talk.
