DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is encouraging Democratic lawmakers to bring Muslims to the State of the Union address Tuesday night in an effort to show empathy for their “persecution,” which Wasserman Schultz compared to the way Jews were treated under Nazi Germany.
At least two House members are taking Schultz’s advice, inviting officials from the terror-stained Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to join them as guests during President Obama’s speech to the nation.
Democrat Reps. Zoe Lofgren of California and Alcee Hastings of Florida will both be hosting representatives from CAIR chapters in their states.
Lofgren will host Sameena Usman, a government relations coordinator in San Francisco, while Hastings will by accompanied by Nezar Hamze, the chief operating officer of CAIR’s Florida branch.
CAIR’s reputation is dubious at best, as it remains an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas terror funding case that was tried in 2008 in Dallas, Texas. This trial led to several convictions of U.S. Muslims who were funneling money and support to Hamas, which is on the U.S. State Department’s list of international terrorist organizations. CAIR was exposed during the trial, along with several other U.S. Islamic groups, as a front for the international Muslim Brotherhood.
Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., the Democratic National Committee chairwoman, urged Democratic lawmakers to bring Muslim constituents to the speech as a rebuke to what she described as “hate-filled” rhetoric from politicians on the right, the Orlando Sun-Sentinel reported Monday.
“The rhetoric and vitriol that has been targeted at this community has been absolutely outrageous and unacceptable,” Wasserman Schultz said at a news conference. “And as a member of a minority religion myself, one that has faced persecution throughout our existence, to me the idea that we would stand idly by and ignore that and not stand up and use our voices to stand up for our brothers and sisters in the Muslim-American community was just unacceptable.”
Noted author and Islam expert Robert Spencer told WND that Wasserman Schultz seems more concerned about the feelings of Muslims than about the families of recent Islamic terror attacks which have claimed the lives of five U.S. servicemen in Chattanooga, 14 Americans celebrating Christmas in San Bernardino, and nearly cost a Philadelphia cop his life over the weekend.
And her thinly veiled comparison of Muslims in America to Jews during the Holocaust was simply “outrageous,” Spencer said.
“Her comparison is as outrageous as it is inaccurate. Muslims aren’t being persecuted in the US, despite the best efforts of groups such as the Hamas-linked CAIR to claim otherwise,” Spencer said. “Jews in Nazi Germany were not mounting terror attacks akin to those we have recently seen in Chattanooga, San Bernardino and Philadelphia, and justifying them by referring to their religious texts. She is extremely irresponsible to equate legitimate concern for stopping jihad terror with the persecution of the Jews in Germany, and the effect of her words will be to chill anti-terror efforts and encourage jihad murder of American civilians.”
CAIR itself been named a terrorist organization by the United Arab Emirates while its parent organization, the Muslim Brotherhood, has been banned as an extremist organization in Egypt, Russia, Syria and Saudi Arabia. The group has some 2,000 chapters in 70 countries and seeks to establish Shariah law through both violent and non-violent strategies, depending on the country.
Yet, in the U.S. the Muslim Brotherhood enjoys not only acceptance as a mainstream Islamic organization but access to the highest levels of government power.
Muslim Brotherhood Members have held high positions in the Obama Administration, according to the Egyptian magazine Rose El-Youssef.
The magazine’s bombshell article from Dec. 22, 2012 exposed six American Islamists who it said enjoy strong influence over U.S. policy, according to an English translation of portions of the article by the Investigative Project on Terrorism.
The six U.S. officials said to be Brotherhood operatives were:
- Arif Alikhan, assistant secretary of Homeland Security for policy development
- Mohammed Elibiary, a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council
- Salam al-Marayati, co-founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC)
- Imam Mohamed Magid, president of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)
- Eboo Patel, a member of President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships
- Rashad Hussain, the U.S. special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
CAIR operatives have repeatedly refused to denounce Hamas and Hizballah as terrorist groups, noted Spencer in his blog, Jihad Watch.
Several former CAIR officials have been convicted of various crimes related to jihad terror (see WND’s Big List of terror-tied CAIR officials).
“CAIR’s cofounder and longtime Board chairman (Omar Ahmad), as well as its chief spokesman (Ibrahim Hooper), have made Islamic supremacist statements,” Spencer writes. “A California chapter distributed a poster telling Muslims not to talk to the FBI, and a Florida chapter distributed pamphlets with the same message. CAIR has opposed every anti-terror measure that has ever been proposed or implemented, and has been declared a terror organization by the United Arab Emirates.”
Meanwhile President Obama will be hosting his own Muslim at his State of the Union address. He has invited a Syrian refugee living in Detroit, Refaai Hamo, as one of his guests.
According to refugee watchdog Ann Corcoran, several points in Hamo’s story are in utter conflict. Depending on which account of Hamo’s story is cited, he either lost his son or his wife in a bombing raid on his home in Syria. He is called a scientist in one story, and a civil engineer in another.
“The White House and the No-Borders activists will use Hamo tonight as part of a massive PR campaign they are waging on America to get your minds right on the Obama Syrian influx just now getting underway,” Corcoran writes in her new one-year blogging project, “American Resistance 2016!”
Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the first Muslim elected to Congress and one of two now serving in the House of Representatives, challenged Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., to bring a Muslim American as one of his guests to the speech.
“This is an opportunity to really drive the point home that there are no Americans who are suspect just based on their religious identity, that all Americans are welcome in the people’s house,” Ellison said in an interview with the Hill last week.
