Famed Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz has a message for hypersensitive, modern college students: If you need a safe space, stay home.
Dershowitz, during a recent appearance on New York’s AM 970 “The Cats Roundtable,” said that “humorless” and overly sensitive college students are demanding ridiculous levels of political correctness on campuses.
“They want a safe space for their ideas? Well, fine. Don’t go to college; don’t go to universities. Universities are not going to give you a safe space for your ideas. Your ideas are going to be challenged. Whether they’re ideas about sex, rape, consent, race, religion, terrorism — every one of your ideas is going to be challenged,” Dershowitz told host John Catsimatidis.
Dershowitz went on to note that college educators have a responsibility to challenge students’ views.
“I used to teach freshmen at Harvard and I would get these 18-year-old kids, and I would challenge every one of their ideas. Nothing was sacred; there are no safe spaces for ideas. You try to do it in a nice way. You try not to be particularly nasty when you’re confronting students. But when a student comes up with a dumb idea, I’m not going to say what a great idea that was,” he explained.
According to Dershowitz, it’s time for university administrators to take a step back and stop allowing themselves to be bullied by thin-skinned students.
“This idea of safe spaces and stopping yourself from being microaggressed, what does that mean? My God, sense of humor has disappeared from college campuses.”
“We have to restore sense of humor; get back to where every idea is freely expressed on campus, no matter how offensive it is to anybody and where there’s no political correctness,” he continued. “Universities and departments of universities should not take positions on political issues. They shouldn’t tell their students who to vote for, who to support when there’s an issue like Israel and Palestine. They shouldn’t tell their students to support affirmative action based on race. Students are free to come up with their own ideas. The universities should not be dictating what their students believe on any issue.”
