The United States is at an increasing risk of attack by violent Islamic extremists. But there’s a disturbing trend developing in the country: Those who suggest that Western governments should re-evaluate the ways Islamic mandates clash with the values of democratic government are being accused of neo-McCarthyism.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson recently told reporters that Muslims in America today face the same “fear, suspicions and prejudice” that victims of former Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s often-misguided communist witch hunts endured throughout the Cold War.
“In 1949, during the McCarthy era, my own grandfather was called upon to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, to deny he was a member of the Communist Party and defend the patriotism of African-Americans,” Johnson said. “Today his grandson is responsible for the homeland security of this entire nation.”
That’s right; for Johnson, it’s personal. His grandad was a victim of McCarthy’s crusade.
But Johnson isn’t exactly telling the whole truth.
Unlike some of the people McCarthy investigated as his crusade grew increasingly troubled, the DHS secretary’s grandpa, Charles S. Johnson, was actually put under the microscope for good reason.
As president of predominantly black Fisk University, the elder Johnson was actively involved in hiring several professors with communist sympathies.
And it’s no secret that similar hiring practices were underway at colleges throughout the nation at the same time.
Today, the DHS secretary is arguing that his relative was singled out without cause.
After all, it’s not like decades of subtle communist propaganda on college campuses has wrecked the education process by killing campus free speech and demonizing free thought that fit neatly within leftist political correctness mandates.
As a Personal Liberty® reader, you know I’m being sarcastic. Unfortunately, you’re also in the well-informed minority.
Johnson’s attempt to preordain today’s American Muslims with the victimhood of wrongfully accused communists is a big deal because the same gradual acceptance of the totally un-American tenets of Sharia as we’ve witnessed with communist values on college campuses will be the end result.
And it’s important to understand why that would be acceptable to people at the highest levels of government.
It’s easy to disregard similarities between the world’s communist and Islamic governments one is traditionally noted for its godlessness and the other for its theocratic mandates.
But think about it for a second.
Communist leaders demand a population’s blind faith in the dictates of the state — no matter how detached from reality or ridden with moral turpitude those dictates may be. Islamic countries operate in the same way — they just have the added benefit of blaming all of their most dastardly acts on the wisdom of a prophet.
And in both situations, failure to comply is earns inhabitants a death sentence.
Both of those leadership styles are totally out of step with how the United States was structured from the onset. In fact, if you single out the two biggest reasons for the nation’s founding you see that it exists as an answer to everything that’s wrong with both communism and Islamic theocracy: Americans wanted representation to accompany mandates and they wanted the freedom to decide a particular religion didn’t jive with their personal feelings.
Some of us still do.
But you have to understand that the American citizens’ deep-seated belief that his natural rights supersede any earthly leader’s desires, or misinterpretations of scripture for personal gain, has long been a thorn in the side of federal officials that desire more control over the people.
So they desire ways to champion factions of the population who are willing to blindly accept total control.
Good examples include college students too afraid to hurt the feelings of a comrade too speak their minds on controversial topics and Muslims in America who resent the freedoms forbidden them by Sharia but embraced by Western infidels with Christian, Jewish or non-religious backgrounds.
Josef Stalin would have called them “useful idiots” and Allah’s preference would be those “who submit,” respectively.
Both are un-American, and we shouldn’t be ashamed to say so.
