Sen. Lindsey Graham dropped out of the GOP primary race for the presidency Monday, telling a source he didn’t want to drop out, but the time had come.
“I was hoping not to have to make this call,” he said, the Daily Mail reported, citing a person who listened to Graham’s conference call announcement to supporters. “But I think the time has come for me to suspend my campaign.”
Graham reportedly complained about his second-tier status and relegation to the “undercard” debate stage, the Daily Mail reported.
“I just don’t see how we [can] grow the campaign without getting on the main stage,” he said. “[We can’t] get our voice on equal footing with others. This second-tier debate process has been difficult for us. I think we’ve done well in the debates. It’s just hard to break through, because the buzz doesn’t last very long.”
He then sent out a video on YouTube making the announcement official, stating: “Today, I’m suspending my campaign for president.” He then clarified, “I’m not going to suspend my desire to help the country.”
Graham, who hails from South Carolina, never moved into the double-digits of support with voters, but nonetheless managed to zing one-liners at various campaign venues that dominated some press coverage.
For instance, he just recently said at the last GOP debate: “I’m not afraid of a guy riding around on a horse without his shirt on,” while speaking of Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
He finished the thought by saying: “The guy’s got a pair of twos and we got a full house and he’s walking all over Obama.”
