Top television network managers reportedly gathered for a meeting to discuss how they might launch a collaborative effort and fight back against what they perceive as unfair treatment from Donald Trump’s campaign.
The Washington Post reported executives from ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox and NBC News are fed up with what they’re characterizing as the Trump treatment – the purported harsh campaign coverage restrictions, impolite responses from staffers, the hostile environment and constant clashes – and they want it to stop.
One example: Trump’s top campaign manager Corey Lewandowski recently threatened to yank CNN Noah Gray’s press credentials over a spat and Gray responded by recording the threat and posting it online, the Washington Post reported.
Another example: Reporters covering Trump’s campaign stop in South Carolina were reportedly told to stay in the press area or lose their credentials.
At the same time, the complaints against Trump’s campaign can just as easily be said of other political events. Politicians regularly rein in members of the press and corral off certain areas for them to stay in during events and rallies. And it’s not unheard of for politicians to deny press credentials to those members of the media perceived as unfriendly to the point of hostility or bias, as Trump’s campaign has done.
The networks, however, hope to present a unified front to sway the Trump campaign into easing certain restrictions, and to create a common response if one of the members of the group is blacklisted down the line.
