Tensions are high near the Syrian border Tuesday after Turkish fighter jets shot down a Russian SU-24 warplane that reportedly violated airspace boundaries.
Fox News reported one of the pilots is believed dead. The second pilot has reportedly been captured by Turkish forces in Syria.
A Kremlin spokesman labeled it a “very serious incident,” Fox News reported.
Reuters reported Turkey officials sent several warnings to Russian pilots before firing. Russia confirmed its plane was downed, but denied violating Turkish airspace and said pilots had been flying over Syria.
Video from Turkey’s media showed two pilots ejecting and parachuting from the jet shortly before it crashed in an area in northern Syria by the Turkish border called “Turkmen Mountain,” Breitbart reported. Fox News said Syrian video showed villagers surrounding one of the pilots on the ground, who was dead.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense said the craft was shot down “due to shelling from the ground,” the Washington Post reported. Russia’s Defense Ministry also said the craft was just one of more than three dozen planes that had been flying sorties over Syria for the past two months.
Turkey is a NATO ally.
