Phyllis Schlafly, an icon of the conservative movement who has been active for half a century, has a solution to save America and solve its illegal immigration crisis: Load ‘em up on trains and ship ‘em out.
“Every time they say, ‘You can’t deport these people, in my mind’s eye, I see the picture of those railroad cars carrying the illegals out of our country when Eisenhower deported them. They say it was a failure. It wasn’t at all,” Schlafly told WND in an exclusive interview.
“In my mind’s eye, I see those railroad cars full of illegals going south. That’s what they ought to do.”

Schlafly was referencing the 1954 campaign in which President Dwight Eisenhower sent home 3 million illegal aliens and sealed the U.S.-Mexico border. Eisenhower appointed retired Gen. Joseph “Jumpin’ Joe” Swing to arrange for buses and trains to take the illegals deep into Mexico and release them. Thousands more were shipped by boat. The campaign actually convinced many illegals to return to their home countries on their own.
But today America is back in crisis mode, as President Obama refuses to enforce U.S. immigration laws and has been shielding more than 80 percent of illegals from deportation.
“Obama wants to change the character of our country,” Schlafly charged, reacting to an expose highlighted at the top of The Drudge Report on Friday.
“These people come in and have no comprehension of our constitutional system, of limited government, of the people being in control, and I think it’s very tragic,” she continued.
“We had a wonderful country of freedom and prosperity, and that’s why everyone in the world wants to come here. But we can’t let everyone in the world in. And we need to be very persnickety about who we let in. We only want people who love America and want to be American.”
Meanwhile, Obama is planning to swing open America’s doors to at least 10,000 essentially unscreened Syrian migrants before 2017.
WND has documented 21 cases over the last two years in which Muslim refugees and immigrants were involved in terrorist plots on U.S. soil. Another report came out Thursday verifying 66 cases of ISIS attacks of the past 18 months, most of them foiled by the FBI, including many orchestrated by former refugees.
Schlafly said Obama’s plan to flood the U.S. with unscreened foreigners “certainly isn’t American,” and she never thought she’d see the day when a U.S. president failed to do his duty to protect the nation.
“I never did. Even the ones I didn’t vote for, I think, would have stood up for America,” Schlafly said. “Obama has told us that he doesn’t believe America should be thought of as better or exceptional. … Obama has a mystique about him, and he continues to go down what I think is the wrong path. We need a leader who’s going to stand up for America.”
Many politicians – Democrat and Republican – argue that the U.S. has a duty to accept “refugees.”
But Schlafly isn’t having any of that “ridiculous” nonsense.
“These ideas that they’re putting out, that we have some obligation to admit all these people, are just ridiculous,” she said. “We don’t have an obligation to admit anybody. A country that doesn’t have borders isn’t a country. We need to have borders.”
In fact, she says, the national sentiment on this issue explains why GOP front-runner Donald Trump is surging in the polls – far ahead of establishment candidates.
As WND reported Wednesday, Trump came out swinging against Obama over the ongoing issues, telling radio host Laura Ingraham the commander in chief was sending Syrian migrants primarily to Republican states, ostensibly for political reasons.
Trump tweeted: “Refugees from Syria are now pouring into our great country. Who knows who they are – some could be ISIS. Is our president insane?”
As for Trump’s extraordinary popularity, Schlafly said, “The Republican elite are very dismayed. Things aren’t going the way they planned and believed it would. I think it’s really funny to watch, because they’re being outmaneuvered by events as well as by Donald Trump. And he has put his finger on the big issue – the issue of all these people coming in. And now we know they’re criminals. They’re not vetted.”
She added, “I think the grassroots are going to win out because there are more of them every day who are believing what Trump says and disbelieving what the elite are trying to tell us.”
Schlafly shared her prescription for the biggest issue facing the nation: Give grassroots America exactly what it wants.
“We want to scare out the people who want to undo our country,” she said. “That’s what the grassroots are looking for. The grassroots are very upset with all the people who think they’re smart and who are trying to remake our country. The grassroots are still fine. They believe in America.”
