Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Hou0se Republicans say it is time to legally call the Muslim Brotherhood what it truly is – a terrorist organization.

The Republican presidential hopeful introduced the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act on Tuesday, which echoes a 2014 House bill crafted by former Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann.

“As this bill details, the Brotherhood’s stated goal is to wage violent jihad against its enemies, and our legislation is a reality check that the United States is on that list as well,” Cruz said in a statement released Wednesday.

The free WND special report “ISIS Rising,” by Middle East expert and former Department of Defense analyst Michael Maloof, will answer your questions about the jihadist army threatening the West.

Cruz’s bill would give the U.S. State Department 60 days to agree or disagree with designating the Islamic organization a terror group, the Hill reported Wednesday. If the Obama administration disagreed, then it would have to provide a “detailed justification as to which criteria have not been met.”

“The group supports and stands behind numerous terrorist organizations that are responsible for acts of violence and aggression,” said Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Florida, the lead House sponsor, the Washington Examiner reported Wednesday. “It is time for Congress and the Department of State to recognize and sanction them as they deserve, as a foreign terrorist organization.”

The Muslim Brotherhood

The Muslim Brotherhood

The Muslim Brotherhood, which began over 85 years ago and adopted a paramilitary wing in 1928, has a bloody history. It briefly came to power with the overthrow of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in January 2011, but was banned after military coup ended violent protests in 2013.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Wednesday there may be a way for the outlawed group to be reintegrated into society.

“The problem doesn’t lie with the government and it doesn’t lie with me. It lies with public opinion, with Egyptians. Egyptians are peaceful people and they don’t like violence. They reacted against the Muslim Brotherhood and are wary of them,” Sisi said in the TV interview, Reuters reported. “This country is big enough to accommodate all of us. They are part of Egypt and so the Egyptian people must decide what role they can play.”
