A CNN correspondent, Elise Labott, was suspended for two weeks from her media position after sending out a critical tweet of the House vote, driven by Republicans, to limit the number of refugees allowed into America, due to terrorist concerns.
The vote to suspend a program letting in Syrian and Iraqi refugees to American passed the GOP-led body of Congress by a 289-137 vote. President Obama has vowed to veto the bill.
Labott’s tweet included this non-partisan text: “The House easily passed a bill Thursday that would suspend the program allowing Syrian and Iraqi refugees into the U.S. until key national security agencies certify they don’t pose a security risk.”
But she then opined, above a photograph of the Capitol building: “House passes bill that could limit Syrian refugees. Statue of Liberty bows head in anguish.”
The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple asked CNN for clarification of its editorial guidelines. And shortly after, he received a response, which he then tweeted: “CNN source informs me that Eilise Labott has been suspended for two weeks for tweet about House vote on refugees.”
The New York Daily News printed her apology, which she posted a short time after the suspension was rendered.
“Everyone, it was wrong of me to editorialize,” she wrote. “My tweet was inappropriate and disrespectful. I sincerely apologize.”
