Trump wants to talk about mental health, not guns

During a town hall meeting in New Hampshire Monday, GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump vowed to veto new gun regulations if elected.

“We have tremendous regulations already, a lot of people don’t even realize,” Trump told an audience gathered at the event.

Instead of enacting new gun laws, Trump said that Americans would be if government would simply enforce those already on the books.

“People aren’t abiding by them, government does a terrible job of enforcing them, but we already have tremendous regulations,” he said.

In addition to enforcing already existing gun laws, Trump contends that the nation should shift the argument over gun violence from firearms to mental health.

“We have a huge mental health problem,” Trump said, adding, “If you look at some states, including New York and others, they’ve left, in order to save money for finance reasons, left people out of mental institutions.”

The GOP hopeful said that no matter how tough U.S. gun laws become, people who are criminally insane will find ways to get their hands on firearms.

“It is people that are unstable. We have to straighten out our mental health. And we do have in this country big mental health problems. And that’s the problem,” Trump added.

Trump also criticized fellow GOP hopefuls Jeb Bush and Ben Carson as being “weak on the 2nd Amendment” for failing to take a firm stance against additional gun control measures.
