Back in the heyday of the old Soviet Union, Karl Marx’s enduring gift to college sociology professors everywhere hit its stride with a series of purges. Beginning in the 1930s, these cullings of the communist herd began with the liquidation of opponents of socialism’s favorite son, Josef Stalin, and metastasized into an all-consuming “brain drain” that ultimately left communism’s grandest experiment living off a capitalism-funded IV in China. The Soviet house party reached its high point with the Moscow show trials. In a series of public spectacles, dissidents were dragged from their homes, stripped of their possessions, imprisoned and/or killed. The charges were the usual amorphous “crimes against the state” kind of stuff that has served as punctuation marks on the lives of defenders of liberty throughout the ages. Well over 30 million people were crushed under the wheels of politically enforced unanimity.
The same scene was replayed about 30 years later in Mao Zedong’s China, when the Cultural Revolutionaries buried a generation under the pages of anti-intellectual claptrap of Mao’s “Little Red Book.” Once again, the fungus of collective thought ran amok, smothering as many as 75 million.
Fortunately, we live in a country where intellectual and political diversity are not only allowed, but constitutionally encouraged. Of course, that’s provided you’re not one of those Christian bakers, or something equally distasteful, in which case you’ve probably learned how to bake a wedding cake at gunpoint.
Lucky for us, our government not only exists to defend liberty but to reflect it, so that no American need ever fear mortal peril for straying from the governmental narrative. Of course, that’s provided you didn’t do something upsetting, like donate to a Tea Party group or make a crappy YouTube video, in which case you’ve enjoyed cuddling with your IRS auditor or your cellmate.
It’s a good thing our finest institutions of higher learning are populated by resolute defenders of the most important freedom of all: the freedom to learn, to enlighten, to pursue the truth. Our next generation of American thinkers and doers will be guided into society’s warm embrace by nothing but the finest stewards of youthful development. Of course, that’s provided your name hasn’t made it onto an enemies list compiled by a cabal of 20 global warmist college “professors.” Last week, that group wrote to the president in hopes that he move to prosecute so-called “climate change” deniers under Federal Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) guidelines. In that case, you’ll be reported to the government by college professors who are clearly skipping more than just class.
And thank the Almighty that we live in a country in which we can thank the Almighty. Of course, that’s provided you’re not an 8-year-old bowing his head in silent prayer before homeroom at a government school or a pro-life group that had the temerity to video Planned Parenthood breaching nearly every medical and human moral code in existence. In that case, enjoy your suspension, kid. And tell those pro-life parents of yours not to leave the jurisdiction, if you know what I mean.
It started with Internal Revenue Service agents harassing citizens. Then, people started facing prison time. Now, leftists are pushing the president to imprison Americans over a pseudoscientific theory that makes the “Little Red Book” look like the “Principia Mathematica.” And I can’t help but notice that anti-Bill of Rights hate groups like Moms Demand and the Brady Campaign have reached an all-time high on the noise meter. At a time in which American freedom faces an unprecedented internal threat, the guys who want to disarm you are working hand-in-paw with the guys who want to make you disappear. We may not have reached “show trial” levels of crazy around here, but the self-anointed proletariat hordes are swarming; and they’ve got some pretty ugly friends in high places.
