Jeb Bush probably should have read his own book before thinking to ask Donald Trump for apologies Wednesday night in a confrontation about Bush’s Mexican-born wife.
Trump had accused Bush of making immigration policy decisions based on the Mexican heritage of the former Florida governor’s wife, Columba.
“To subject my wife into the middle of a raucous political conversation was completely inappropriate, and I hope you apologize for that, Donald,” Bush told Trump during the Sept. 16 CNN’s Republican debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California.
Bush then demanded that the billionaire apologize to his wife in front of 22.9 million viewers.
But Trump fired back, “No, I won’t do that, because I’ve said nothing wrong.”
However, Bush’s “Immigration Wars,” published in 2013, details a direct correlation between his relationship with Columba and his views on immigration. Animosity between Bush and Trump has simmered since July, when the billionaire essentially said just that.
“If my wife were from Mexico, I think I would have a soft spot for people from Mexico,” Trump said during a CNN interview in July.
Bush – prior to the emergence of Trump – concurred.
“Immigration to me is personal. It means my wife and my family,” Bush wrote in “Immigration Wars,” the Daily Caller reported Thursday. “Thanks to my wife, I became bicultural and bilingual, and my life is better because of it. For the first time in my life, I learned what the immigrant experience was, and I grew to appreciate her desire to learn English and embrace American values, while still retaining her love for the traditions of Mexico.”
