Presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s campaign camp slapped back some negative press from a town hall question about what the country could do to “get rid” of Muslims, telling a social media audience the outrage is media-driven and the larger issue is President Obama’s assault on Christianity.

An unidentified man at a town hall meeting in Rochester, New Hampshire, asked Trump: “We have a problem in this country. It’s called Muslims. You know our current president is one. You know he’s not even an American.”

Trump interrupted to say, “We need this question. This is the first question,” CNN reported.

The man, who wore a Trump t-shirt, continued: “Anyway, we have training camps growing where they want to kill us. That’s my question. When can we get rid of them?”

Trump’s reply?

“We’re going to be looking at a lot of different things,” he said. “You know, a lot of people are saying that and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening. We’re going to be looking at that and many other things.”

Trump disregarded the Obama reference. But Democratic Party front-runner Hillary Clinton was quick to pounce.

In a tweet, she wrote: “Donald Trump not denouncing false statements about POTUS & hateful rhetoric about Muslims is disturbing & just plain wrong. Cut it out. –H.”

The Trump campaign, shortly after, went on the defense.

Robert Costa with the campaign tweeted: “Trump stmt to WaPo: ‘The media wants to make this issue about Obama. The bigger issue is that Obama is waging a war against Christians …”

He also said: “More Trump:’…Christians need support in this country. Their religious liberty is at stake.”

And Kailani Koenig, another campaign official for the Trump side, sent out this Twitter message: “Trump camp: ‘Mr. Trump was referring to the need to protect Christians religious liberties as his previous statement says and nothing more.”
