Martin O’Malley, the former Maryland governor’s who’s now seeking the Democratic Party’s nod for the White House, kicked off his NPR interview with Diane Rehm on a sour note, receiving a public dress-down by the host for his failure to appear, as promised, in the studio.
O’Malley was supposed to meet with Rehm in person for the talk. But instead, he called in by phone, saying he could not make it to the building on time.
Rehm’s response, the Blaze reported: “Governor O’Malley, I must say I’m somewhat surprised that you could not make it here in time as you had promised to.”
O’Malley tried a lighthearted response, but it fell flat.
“Well Diane, you can’t believe every promise every politician makes,” he said.
Rehm simply shook her head in agreement, but without a trace of a smile, the Blaze said. And O’Malley was finally forced to issue an apology.
“I sincerely apologize,” O’Malley said, speaking of the traffic and acknowledging he “should have left even earlier.”
Rehm agreed.
“Absolutely,” she said. “I am disappointed because, as you know, it’s a national interview on NPR and I do expect guests to live up to their promises.”
Another awkward moment: Rehm asked O’Malley what sources he planned to tap to raise the kind of money he needs to become a real contender for the White House – and again, O’Malley’s try for a joke fell flat.
“From listeners like you,” he quipped. “Did that work? Are they calling?”
Rehm’s short reply: “I doubt it.”
