Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal came out swinging Wednesday at the CNN-sponsored Republican presidential candidate debate.
His target?
The front-runner.
“Let’s stop treating Donald Trump as a Republican,” he said.
Jindal slammed Trump as “not a Republican, nor a Democrat, nor an independent. Donald Trump believes in Donald Trump.”
His answer was greeted with applause.
Jindal previously has called Trump a “madman who must be stopped” and tried to set himself up as a committed conservative leader who has “the bandwidth” to push through conservative policies in Washington.
He argued Ronald Reagan’s famous “11th Commandment” not to attack a fellow Republican does not apply and suggested that if someone who he believed was a true conservative was in a similar position to Trump as the Republican frontrunner, he would drop out and endorse him.
In response, Rick Santorum took a more moderate tact, arguing Trump “has every right” to run as a Republican for president and argued the candidates should trust in the voters to see who has the conservative position.
He also attacked from Jindal’s right on immigration, suggesting the governor had previously supported amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegals.
Jindal said he supported establishing border security before making any decision about what to do about illegal immigrants in the United States.
