A former Hillary Clinton staffer, who also happens to be the attorney general for the State of Pennsylvania, has been suspended from the practice of law following her indictment on several criminal charges, including perjury.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, a Democrat with long-standing ties to Clinton politics, was indicted in August following a lengthy controversy over her alleged attempts to leak grand jury information from a 2009 case — and then lying under oath to keep her alleged role hidden.
“Kane allegedly leaked information to a political operative to pass to the news media ‘in hopes of embarrassing and harming former state prosecutors she believed, without evidence, made her look bad,’” Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman told WPVI-TV last month.
Kane left a county-level DA position in 2007 to join Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential campaign. When Kane later decided to run for Pennsylvania AG, she received Bill Clinton’s endorsement.
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, himself a Democrat, has even called for Kane’s resignation. So far, she hasn’t complied. But on Monday, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania suspended Kane’s license to practice law, creating a strange legal conundrum in which the state’s highest government lawyer may no longer be credentialed to fulfill her public duty.
“The suspension is temporary but it does raise questions about whether it makes Kane ineligible for her office,” Politics PA observed.
“Article IV, Section 5 of the Pennsylvania Constitution states that: ‘No person shall be eligible to the office of Attorney General except a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.’”
Kane has so far insisted that she intends to remain in her elected position.
In all, Kane was charged with eight counts: a felony perjury charge and seven misdemeanors, including obstruction of justice, conspiracy, false swearing and official oppression.
