The murders of four police officers in a span of less than two weeks has police departments throughout the nation on edge, as a majority of Americans say police are under attack because of heightened anti-cop political rhetoric.
Overall, the number of officers killed this year is actually lower than in years past. But the high-profile murders of officers in Texas and Illinois has sparked a national conversation about the fact that many people see police as an enemy.
In places like Houston, anti-police sentiment is becoming very visible on public streets.
Houston’s KTRK reported Tuesday:
Some disturbing graffiti is popping up around town, emojis showing a police officer and a gun.
We’ve seen them in at least four spots in the Washington Avenue area, and we’ve gotten reports of more than that.
As you might imagine, those in uniform say it’s incredibly disturbing to see this just days after a deputy was killed while pumping gas.
HPD Union President Ray Hunt said, “I can’t believe that there are people out there so heartless and so ruthless to put something on there before this deputy is even buried. It does nothing to help to help morale in the police department and does nothing to help the Goforth family.”
That has cops in the area on edge just days after Darren Goforth, the deputy sheriff killed in Texas, was shot to death as he refueled his patrol car.
Officers’ fears of being targeted are intensified by the fact that some people are openly calling for the murder of police.
Infowars reported Wednesday on the shocking comments made by one online radio host in a recent broadcast calling for black Americans to murder whites and police.
From the report on the broadcast:
The host stated that there will be more killings of cops and white people in general by black people, who will kill one by one.
“It’s open season on killing whites and police officers and probably killing cops period. It’s open season. Picking them off. Today we live in a time when the white man will be picked off.“ the host stated.
Spewing racist hate-filled rhetoric, the host also lauded the execution of Texas Deputy Darren Goforth.
“It reminds me of a Bob Marley song “I shot the Sheriff,” he said, adding “It’s unavoidable, it’s inescapable, it’s funny.”
The host called for an all out race war, stating that “It’s about to go down, it’s open season on killing white people and crackers.”
The racist host compared black people killing whites to a pride of lions picking off Buffalo one by one, saying that the lions are outnumbered, but are much more deadly and cunning.
“Yes, they say it, there will be a race war.” the host stated, adding that “The Black Lives Matter movement isn’t enough,” yet admitting an affiliation with activists within that movement.
With statements like that becoming increasingly common, a majority of Americans sense a war on police.
According to a new Rasmussen survey, 58 percent of likely U.S. voters believe that there is public war on police.
From the polling agency:
Sixty percent (60%) believe comments critical of the police by some politicians make it more dangerous for police officers to do their jobs. Only 18% think those comments improve the quality of the police’s performance. Thirteen percent (13%) say the politicians’ comments have no impact.
While there is usually a wide racial difference of opinion on questions related to the police, most black voters (54%) agree with the majority of white (60%) and other minority voters (56%) that there is a war on police underway.
Blacks (36%) are far less likely than whites (66%) and other minorities (55%), however, to say the comments of some politicians are making it more dangerous for the police. There’s very little belief in any of the groups, though, that the comments are improving police performance.
America’s law enforcement officers are taking note.
Law enforcement experts like Ron Freeman, a retired Pittsburgh homicide detective, say that the growing anti-police sentiment is making officers more reluctant to seek out criminals.
“They’re not as proactive,” he told Police One. “Some — not all, but some — have told me they’re not as proactive as they used to be. One reason is there’s apparently a war on police now. They’re becoming targets more and more. It’s almost a daily issue now. That creates an issue where officers don’t want to put themselves in those positions.”
And New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton on Tuesday predicted that the country will suffer dire consequences for the current “national momentum against police.”
“Many people do need to be in jail, they don’t need to be on the streets,” he said.
