Allen West: Bernie Sanders has ‘more cojones’ than GOP’s leaders

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign appearance at Christian-based Liberty University on Monday had many members of the liberal media wondering why the self-avowed socialist would chance engaging such a heavily conservative crowd. Former GOP Rep. Allen West has an idea: Sanders has guts — but he also knows that conservatives are more civil than their liberal peers.

Sanders’ speech was not met with the same enthusiasm as he’s received from audiences more in tune with his message of economic inequality reform. In fact, the biggest applause during the appearance came when a student asked Sanders could spend so much time talking about helping the helpless while still supporting abortion.

One attendee, speaking to NPR, described the Liberty University audience’s response to Sanders simply, saying the students were “polite.”

West, in a Tuesday blog post, noted that conservative speakers are almost never welcomed with the same willingness to hear opposing views on liberal campuses.

He writes:

Now, of course, you have to ask the obvious question: what uber-liberal progressive university would allow and respectfully listen to a constitutional conservative presidential candidate on its campus articulate the principles of free enterprise economics? Heck, you remember how Rutgers University wouldn’t allow former National Security Advisor and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to speak at a commencement ceremony — an honor that had been granted to someone called “Snookie.”

Yet here was Senator Bernie Sanders addressing the students at Liberty University — and yes, I’ve spoken there — fresh off his filibuster vote to block the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iranian deal, from being brought to the Senate floor. Based upon that vote alone, there’s nothing on which I would agree with Bernie Sanders.

And here’s an avowed socialist who embraces an economic theory that supports President Obama’s assertion in 2012 that, “if you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.”

Still, West contends that Sanders’ decision to speak at the college without altering his message took some guts.

Gotta hand it to ya, Bernie, you’ve got far more cajones than GOP elected officials. But there are those of us who recognize the snake oil you’re selling.

Sadly, there were some 7-8 million evangelical Christians who didn’t even come out to vote in 2012. As a result, the progressive socialist left is so emboldened they’ll come right to the largest Christian university in the world.
