Sen. Bernie Sanders, the self-described socialist who’s taking the Democratic polls for president by storm – rapidly closing the gap with frontrunner Hillary Clinton – is now heading to the faith-based Liberty University to give platform remarks.
Liberty, founded by Jerry Falwell, is the site where Sen. Ted Cruz kicked off his campaign for president.
And it’s certainly a school where students and administrators hold views more in line with Cruz’s than with Sanders. But Sanders said in a statement reported by Mediaite he received an invitation, and has accepted, despite the likely clashes of politics and culture.
“Liberty University was kind enough to invite me to address a convocation and I decided to accept. It goes without saying that my views on many issues – women’s rights, gay rights, education and many other issues – are very different from the opinions of some in the Liberty University community. I think it is important, however, to see if we can reach consensus regarding the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality in our country, about the collapse of the middle class, about the high level of childhood poverty, about climate change and other issues,” he said, in a statement.
His visit is scheduled for Sept. 14.
