Richard John Santorum, son of Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, was charged with DWI after he allegedly slid behind the wheel of his vehicle with roughly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
Santorum, 22, a cadet at the Citadel Military College in South Carolina, had “glassy eyes” and “slurred speech,” and “showed specific signs of impairment,” a police report read, CNN found.
The Daily Mail reported his first breathalyzer test came in at .145, nearly twice the legal .08 limit.
The arrest took place in Virginia about midnight on July 11, but is only coming to national media attention now – the same day his father, Rick, is due to take the Fox News stage at 5 p.m. for a presidential debate with six other GOP contenders.
The younger Santorum’s attorney, Christopher Day, said of the event: “I don’t try my cases in the press and I don’t have anything to say about my client.”
The elder Santorum’s campaign spokesman, meanwhile, said similarly.
“The campaign does not comment on family personal matters,” Matt Beynon said, the Daily Mail reported.
