Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Thursday that fellow GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s popularity among potential voters has been artificially inflated by media personalities focusing too heavily on the businessman.
“You all covered him with about a billion dollars’ worth news of media,” Paul told “CBS This Morning” when asked about Trump.
“The news is what the news is,” Paul continued. “But you have to admit that that there’s been an extraordinary amount of attention paid to one person.”
The senator said that “anybody’s numbers would rise with that amount of attention” before suggesting that he and other Republican candidates simply need to work harder to “break through” to voters.
Despite feeling that the media has focused too heavily on Trump, Paul said that he understands why GOP voters would be impressed by the business mogul’s campaign.
“What he’s tapped into … is that 90 percent of people are unhappy with Washington,” he said.
In that respect, Paul suggested that he and Trump aren’t all that different. For instance, Paul has long called for term limits to weaken Washington’s political class.
“I’d wash the whole place out,” he said. “The whole place needs to be, you know, clean swept and started over again.”
“We need new people,” Paul continued. “I’ve met almost every leader on the stage in Washington, and there is no monopoly of knowledge up there.”
