Fellow Democrat slams Hillary’s ‘coronation’ for sucking the life out of party

It’s hard to be a Democrat with ambition, unless you’re Hillary Clinton. Just ask former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who’s trying to get some recognition as an alternative candidate in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary.

O’Malley slammed the Democratic Party’s sham candidate-vetting process in a statement reacting to the party’s announcement of its better-late-than-never debate schedule. The Democratic National Committee on Thursday revealed that no Democratic debates would take place until October — a delay that further cements Hillary Clinton’s “inevitable” status as the presumed nominee, according to O’Malley.

An O’Malley strategist even went so far as to insinuate that the DNC’s hand-holding and Hillary favoritism threatens to undermine the party’s strength and unity — a potential fracturing more characteristic of the GOP in recent years.

“By inserting themselves into the debate process, the DNC has ironically made it less democratic,” strategist Bill Hyers said in a statement “attributable” to O’Malley. “The schedule they have proposed does not give voters — nationally, and especially in early states — ample opportunity to hear from the Democratic candidates for President. If anything, it seems geared toward limiting debate and facilitating a coronation, not promoting a robust debate and primary process.”

Of course he’s talking about Hillary. The O’Malley camp even accused the party’s leadership — a group O’Malley referred to as a “small cabal” in Iowa Wednesday — of “rigging” the primary.

“Rather than giving the appearance of rigging the process and cutting off debate, the DNC should take themselves out of the process. They should let individual and truly independent news, political, and community organizations create their own debates and allow the Democratic candidates for President to participate. There is a long, proud tradition of voters in early states like Iowa and New Hampshire getting to hear early and often from candidates for President — the DNC schedule kills that tradition, and we shouldn’t stand for it.”

Fellow Democratic candidate and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has also complained loudly about the party’s unabashed zeal to usher Hillary past the primary. Sanders wrote to DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz earlier in the campaign season, urging party leaders not to wait until fall to begin the debate season, since doing so would greatly delay the introduction of less-familiar candidates to average voters.
