Energy group: Get ready for EPA Police if Obama gets his way

The Environmental Protection Agency’s plan to place harsh restrictions on ground-level pollution would encourage state and local governments to harshly regulate the pollution-creating everyday activities of average Americans, says an energy industry group.

In a recent advertisement, the Environmental Policy Alliance says the proposal would essentially unleash “EPA Police” on the public.

“President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency is considering new regulations on ozone that could trigger some new, crazy laws, such as bans on lawn-mowing during certain times of the day, new parking space taxes and new fees based on how many miles you drive your car,” the group says in a video released via YouTube.

The EPA’s proposed last year a rule that would restrict ground-level ozone pollution from its current 75 parts per billion limit to between 65 and 70 parts per billion. The agency would charge state and local governments with finding ways to bring down pollution.

“When the city they live in can’t meet the EPA’s ozone standards, residents will have to adopt to new emissions limits passed by their localities,” the Environmental Policy Alliance says on its website. “That means changing how they use their cars, household appliances, etc. (and how much they pay to own and use them).”

Some possibilities include:

• Bans on Morning Lawn and Garden Work
• Replacing older lawn and garden equipment and older appliances with newer, more efficient models
• Time-of-Day tolls — Your commute could be more expensive depending on what time you drive
• Lower Speed Limits
• Taxes on Parking Spaces
• Higher Vehicle Registration Fees — If you own multiple vehicles, an older car, or drive a lot of miles, your registration costs could increase
• Higher Insurance Premiums for Driving More Miles

“The EPA’s ozone regulation isn’t about controlling harmful emissions; it’s about controlling Americans’ daily lives,” Anastasia Swearingen, senior research analyst for the energy-backed group, said in a statement.
