Senators bored as families testify on illegal immigration and slain loved ones

Some members of the Senate Judiciary Committee appeared completely uninterested by the impassioned testimony Tuesday of family members whose loved ones have died because of encounters with illegal immigrants.

Sabine Durden, a Moreno Valley, California, resident whose son was killed in a 2102 collision with an illegal immigrant with a lengthy criminal history, told The Daily Caller she was angered by what she observed as the hearing unfolded.

“The hardest part for me was to watch some of the Congress members falling asleep and some of them were doing whatever they did on their phones. There were a few that paid attention, because people were pouring their hearts out, and our lives have been shattered. They sit there and participate in it and don’t even have enough decency to just sit there and look at us,” she said.

Durden additionally told Fox News she was “furious” that some committee members “could clearly care less” at the hearing, making no effort to even patronize the speakers by pretending to listen to their testimony.

Durden herself is a legal immigrant from Germany, The DC reports. She earned her U.S. citizenship in 1993, and now applauds GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump for his evident will to speak openly about the nation’s lawless and weak-minded approach to immigration enforcement.

“Donald Trump did in one minute what a lot of us have been trying to do for years,” she told Fox. He “didn’t just come in as a little snowflake rolling and gaining momentum, he came in as an avalanche.”

Judiciary chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told The DC he was paying such focused attention to the families’ testimony that he could not comment on whether his colleagues had demonstrated a lack of sympathy.
