RNC chair wants no-third-party promise from GOP candidates

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus wants GOP presidential hopefuls to pledge not to run third-party if they aren’t selected as the establishment’s presidential choice.

The Republican political establishment has been rocked by presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s unwillingness to toe the party line. It has also come as a surprise to members of the GOP machine that so many disaffected conservatives have delighted in Trump’s call for open season on RINOs.

According to a new CNN/ORC poll, 53 percent of Republican voters believe that Washington politicians are failing to represent their views. Among that majority of disgruntled GOP voters, 24 percent say they would vote for Trump. Following Trump’s first-place lead in support from the group is Jeb Bush, at 13 percent.

Among Republicans overall, Trump’s 18 percent favorability continues to give him a commanding lead over his fellow GOP contenders.

Trump suggested last week that he wouldn’t rule out a third-party run if the GOP establishment’s attitude toward him doesn’t improve despite his high polling numbers.

“Our candidates should pledge not to run as a third-party candidate,” Priebus said on NBC’s “Today.”

The RNC head said that he doesn’t believe any of the current GOP candidates would mount a third-party bid after failing to secure GOP nomination, but he warned it would be a disaster for Republicans.

Priebus used a familiar establishment argument to back his call for a pledge against third-party candidacy, claiming that a popular third-party choice would split the GOP vote and ensure a Democratic victory.

“I think everyone understands that if Hillary Clinton is going to get beat, she is going to get beat by a Republican and most people that run for president run to win,” he said. “If our candidates want to win, then they will have to run as a Republican.”

Priebus’s call for a pledge against third-party candidacy is just the latest RNC attempt to make sure that conservative voters have no options outside of the Republican establishment’s will.

It was recently reported that top Republican donors considered asking serious GOP candidates Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and Marco Rubio to boycott Republican debates as long as Trump’s poll numbers are high enough for him to be included.
