Bowe Bergdahl, the Army soldier who was caught by members of the Taliban while serving in Afghanistan and then exchanged for five Guantanamo Bay detainees, was found in the middle of a pot raid by police in northern California.
Captain Greg Van Patten with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office told Fox News the county marijuana eradication special team came across Bergdahl during the execution of a search warrant at a Redwood City, California, home. Officers questioned him but “determined [him] not to be connected to the operation, at least there was no evidence to suggest he was involved,” Van Patten said, Fox News reported.
Bergdahl identified himself to officers, and authorities soon after determined he was on leave from the Army. The Department of Defense asked if local sheriff’s officials would help Bergdahl back to base.
The sheriff’s office drove Bergdahl to “a halfway point,” and from there, he was transferred to army officials, Fox News reported.
“U.S. Army North was contacted by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s office on July 21 regarding an incident within their jurisdiction in which Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was present,” said Cynthia Smith, a spokesperson for the Army, to Fox News. “Sgt. Bergdahl was on authorized leave in California at that time. He was not arrested and has returned to his duty station on Fort Sam Houston. He has not been charged with any crime involving his time on leave.”
Van Patten said his officers found 180 mature marijuana plants growing in the home. One was arrested, he added.
It’s not known if Bergdahl was given a drug test by the Army. Fox News reported when Bergdahl was picked up in Afghanistan by Army officials, he was high on what seemed to be hashish.
His exchange for five Gitmo detainees was heralded by the White House, but denounced by critics, many of whom said he actually deserted to the Taliban.
