Steve Reinboldt
A woman told ABC News her brother, Steve Reinboldt – who died of AIDS in 1995 – admitted he was “gay” in 1979, and said his first homosexual experience was with Dennis Hastert, the then-coach of his high school’s wrestling team.
Reinboldt’s sister, Jolene, recalled to ABC how she first learned of her brother’s sexual preference. She said he told her in 1979 he was gay, and had been for about eight years.
“I asked him, when was your first same-sex experience,” she said, on ABC News. “He looked at me and said, ‘It was with Dennis Hastert.’ I was stunned.”
She then said she asked why he hadn’t told anyone, and recalled him answering: “He just turned around and kind of looked at me and said, ‘Who is ever going to believe me?’”
ABC News reported: “In Steve Reinboldt’s 1970 high school yearbook, wrestling coach Dennis Hastert wrote that Steve was his ‘great, right hand man’ as the student equipment manager of the Yorkville, Illinois wrestling team.”
His sister said the abuse spanned all four years of high school.
“Mr. Hastert had plenty of opportunities to be alone with Steve because he was there before the meets,” she said. “He was there after everything because he did the laundry, the uniforms. So he was there by himself with him.”
She said Reinboldt died from AIDS in 1995.
“[Hastert] took his belief in himself and his kid of right to be a normal person,” she said. “Here was the mentor, the man who was, you know, basically his friend and stepped into that parental role, who was the one who was abusing him. He damaged Steve I think more than any of us will ever know.”
