A bomb threat made against a plane in Philadelphia turned out Tuesday to be little more than a threat, federal authorities said.
The threat began when an unidentified caller dialed the Transportation Safety Administration and reported an explosive on board a plane that landed at a Philadelphia airport early in the morning, NBC News Philadelphia reported. K-9 and local bomb squad officials swept the craft, and found nothing. Passengers, meanwhile, were taken off the plane and delayed in their travels for hours.
“There was nothing dangerous aboard the plane,” said Joe Sullivan, the police chief inspector for Philadelphia, the Hill reported. “It was a hoax phone threat.”
This threat followed several in recent days made against at least six different airplanes, alleging they carried chemical weapons. All those threats turned out to be hoaxes, too.
The fake Philadelphia bomb threat came just a few hours after TSA Administrator Melvin Carraway was taken off the job, amid reports agents failed to detect test bombs in 67 of 70 Homeland Security undercover cases.
