If Republicans control the lion’s share of state governorships and legislative seats, the opposite is true of those same states’ major cities. With few exceptions, America’s major cities are led by Democrats.
Perhaps that’s why President Obama has reached out directly to mayors from a large swath of America’s urban centers, taking a number of his policy appeals straight to city leaders who demonstrate an attentiveness to Obama’s ideas the president simply doesn’t enjoy on Capitol Hill.
Obama addressed nearly 300 mayors from across the country at a June 19 gathering in San Francisco, imploring city leaders to undertake, at the local level, some of his initiatives that Congress insistently spurns.
The direct approach was decidedly overt. “Given that Congress isn’t always the most willing partner to advance the President’s policy priorities, we’ve taken our efforts to the state and local level,” Obama spokesman Eric Schultz told news outlets.
Obama touched upon a laundry list of Congressional no-go issues that, he hopes, municipal leaders will embrace: raising the minimum wage, gun control and expanding social services programs.
Obama isn’t the only Democrat to identify a straight path to policymaking success. “Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state now campaigning to succeed Obama, will speak to the mayors on Saturday,” reported Bloomberg News.
