White House hopeful seeks ‘free college for all’

Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist who serves his Vermont constituency as an Independent – and who just announced a 2016 run at the White House – is poised to unveil legislation giving all would-be students free four-year college tuition at public facilities.

The taxpayer-funded subsidy would cost millions, and comes on top of Sanders’ earlier call for free two-year college tuition for students.

He justified his bill by saying America needs the “best educated workforce” in order to stay competitive on the global level,” the Hill reported.

“That will not happen,” he said, “if, every year, hundreds of thousands of bright young people cannot afford to go to college and if millions more leave school deeply in debt.”

His bill would abolish tuition for undergrads at all public colleges and universities, and expand work-study opportunities for students. The bill would also “substantially lower” student debt, including lowering rates on loans, he said, the Hill reported.

Sanders is vying for the Democratic Party nomination against Hillary Clinton, former secretary of state and the perceived frontrunner in the race.
