TV host: Calling Paul Ryan ‘hard worker’ insults slaves

Calling a Republican politician a “hard worker” on MSNBC must now be pre-empted by a show of deference to dead U.S. slaves.

A discussion on Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan’s bid for speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives quickly turned into a lecture on race and language by MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry.

Guest Alfonso Aguilar told a panel on Monday that Ryan has a reputation among Democrats and Republicans of being a “hard worker.” The liberal host then launched into non sequitur on remembering how hard Americans slaves worked in cotton fields.

“I just want to pause on one thing because I don’t disagree with you that I actually think Mr. Ryan is a great choice for this role, but I want us to be super careful when we use the language ‘hard worker.’ I actually keep an image of folks working in cotton fields on my office wall because it is a reminder about what hard work looks like,” said Harris-Perry, the Washington Free Beacon reported. “In the context of relative privilege, when you talk about work-life balance and being a hard worker, the moms who don’t have health care … we don’t call them hard workers. We call them failures.”

Aguilar, looking confused, tried to protest.

“That is very unfair. I think we cannot generalize about the Republican Party.”

Republicans are scheduled to nominate a replacement for retiring House Speaker John on Wednesday. A vote by the full House will take place the next day.

“I know many of you want to show the country how to fix our tax code, how to rebuild our military, how to strengthen the safety net, and how to lift people out of poverty,” Ryan said Oct. 22, Reuters reported. “And we can show the country what a commonsense conservative agenda looks like.

Although the Wisconsin congressman has gained two-thirds support from the conservative Freedom Caucus, he still must navigate political headwinds.

“In a bizarre act of arrogance unprecedented in American political history, establishment Republican Paul Ryan has spelled out the terms under which he will accept the third highest office in our constitutional republic and they amount to nothing less than the destruction of democratic government in America,” George Raasly of ConservativeHQ wrote on the website Oct. 21.

Ryan’s critics still have the option of voting for Florida Rep. Daniel Webster.
